A Surprise Proposal – Brandon + Brooklyn

What a weekend this was! Late January, I reached out to Brandon, asking if he and Brooklyn would mind letting me take photos of them so I could get more experience working with couples. They agreed and we started planning. Little did I know he was thinking about proposing!

We had been talking about where we were going to do the session and when, and we decided to do it at The Perfect Story Venue, which is a wedding venue owned by my parents. All the details were set, then I got a text saying, “Hey, I’ve got a fun idea…”

We eventually came up with a plan for my cousin to propose. I went out to the location, scouted, sent him photos of spots that would be perfect, and we even came up with a little bit of a story, just in case she asked. I didn’t have to come up with some disguise or anything like that, as doing photos to help me get started in photography was a good enough reason to be taking photos in the first place – but I definitely would have!

We started the session and I could tell they were slowly getting more comfortable in front of the camera. We went to each of the locations on the property that we wanted to and eventually made it to the back of the venue – the last spot. There were giant windows looking into the venue and family members from both sides were hidden inside, so they could be present for the moment. I had Brandon twirl Brooklyn a couple times and then he was ready. He got down on one knee and the rest is history.

The best part of the whole thing? Brooklyn had no idea! Surprise engagements can be nerve racking, but they are so much fun and so rewarding. The reactions in the moment were priceless. Happy tears were shed and the smiles were genuine. This session was one of my earlier ones, and I thank Brandon for trusting me with helping him plan and letting me photograph such an important moment.

Some helpful tips/thoughts for pulling off a surprise engagement session:

  1. Guys – Make sure you have a photographer! Proposing is a super important moment in your relationship. Your girl will thank you and be super happy that you had a photographer to capture the moment. You’ll be able to post all about it too!
  2. Have a plan. Know where and when. We decided on a specific spot(s) that would do for the proposal and while we were in those spots, I was on my toes, ready for him to do his thing.
  3. Go over how things are going to go at the session. Both the couple and the photographer need to have an idea of how things are going to go down. Planning a surprise engagement doesn’t have to be hard and your photographer will most likely be willing to help you plan!

Like I said, surprise proposal sessions are lots of fun and I loved helping plan and see this one through. Want to book me for yours? Contact me below! I would love to help and capture the moment.
